Welcome and not so welcome

I just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who commented on my last post. It's so lovely to have such a warm welcome back to the world of blogging.

On not so welcome news, I just received the first unpleasant comment on my blog to date. I chose to reject the comment, as I was taken aback at first, but decided to bring the issue to the forefront. It was posted by an anonymous poster (no surprises there) in relation to my cow hide rug and stated:

"Next time I need to induce vomiting, I will look at this page."

Charming, right?

Now I don't expect that every single person in the world is going to love cow hide rugs or want one in their home. But honestly, what kind of a troll goes through blogs to post comments like that?

It's a plain and simple fact that cow hide rugs are a natural by-product of the meat industry. Now I'm not sure what issue the person takes with the rug because their comment wasn't particularly expansive. At the end of the day - the cows are not killed for their skin, a cow hide rug is not a fur coat.

Now I'm not here to enter into a big ethical debate, but I think ultimately there are far bigger issues in the world to deal with than the beef industry.

  1. You should be flattered, Kristen - you have your first hater! That's like graduating for bloggers. ;)

Trolls only do it for the reaction. I find the best approach is not to react at all. But nicely done anyway - a calm response is always better than a rant.

Cowhide isn't to my taste either, but I can appreciate other styles than mine and I think the room looks stunning.

  2. Thanks for the support Kek. At the end of the day, I don't expect everyone to have the same tastes as me. Or even like a single item in my house. Different courses for different horses and all that jazz. I love my house, it makes me so happy to be there and reflects my style which is all that matters.

I may have some different or kitsch items like my headless dog vase, or genie bottles... but I'd rather my house be a little quirky than have it look like the pages of a furniture catalogue.

And like you, there are heaps of styles I love (like the whole Paris apartment look or the Hamptons style) which I wouldn't have in my own home.

I blog about home renovations, home design, furniture etc. because its something I really love. An ideal day for me is lounging around in my ugg boots, drinking coffee and reading a brand new issue of Vogue Living or RealLiving. I love checking out my favourite blogs every day for new ideas and inspiration. I don't always love it, but I'm not going to criticise it.

And really, is my little blog the place to take a big stand and express your outrage over cow hide rugs? Seriously? I love my little part of blogland but some people need to get a life.

  4. 2 friends and I have a cooking blog together and one of the girls posted about kangaroo meat a while ago as a healthy, ethical and sustainable alternative to the traditional beef and lamb we eat here in Australia. It received some responses that blew my mind including "Ah so overseas people get to see what Australians are really like. Creul. Selfish. Greedy. Concerned with themselves. Indifferent to animals."

It's frustrating isn't it? I agree with you 100% about cow hides being a byproduct of the meat industry.

I'm so glad you're blogging again :) Take care! Catherine

  5. It's expected that not everyone will share the same taste as you but you would think that people will have the decency to withhold any rude comments.

    Nasty comment = nasty person.
